Migration is a complex issue and to understand it better one has to grapple with myriad factors. It is necessary to view migration from a multidisciplinary perspective and analyse both its positive and negative impacts on the countries of origin and countries of destination. As Peter Stalker confidently put it, “migration is a phase that countries and the whole world goes through, and that at some future time, balance will prevail and we will all be wondering what the fuss was all about.”

Novib hopes that the expert meeting will guide it to find answers to the many questions it meets in the course of its work among migrant and refugee organisations, in dealing with other development organisations, governments and with its local partners with regard to migration and development issues. The recommended action plan is a good point of departure for Novib in shaping its future policy related to migration and development. Novib urges other development organisations, the civil society, governments and especially the migrant and refugee organisations to continue with the dialogue and dealing with migration issues in a more constructive manner.

The expert meeting will not be possible without the cooperation of a large number of people. We would like to acknowledge foremost the invaluable contributions of the speakers and the participants by sharing their expertise, ideas and suggestions. We would like also to thank Mr Lau Schulpen of CIDIN for ably steering the discussions, crystallising many complex ideas and successfully moulding them to form a concrete plan of action.
